Epilepsy is a major disease and affects the children badly. Many people with epilepsy experience their first seizure before the age of twenty and so if the child has developed epilepsy, it is not all alone, there are many children who develop epilepsy in their early years of life but they can be controlled very well.
Epilepsy affects many children (for example 45000 people in UK). Epilepsy can begin at any age but it occurs specially in childhood. Many of the epilepsy cases are controlled automatically as the child grows; all you need is to give proper medications up to certain age of the child. With certain precautions, child can be treated in a successful manner.
Human brain is made up of millions of nerve cells, which control the entire body systems, functions, senses and thoughts. This performance is done as nerve cells pass electrical signals to each other called as neurotransmission. In some children, these signals can suddenly be interrupted making a child to have an epileptic seizure (known as fits or ‘attacks’).
The word seizure describes any sudden and short even in which, there is a change in person’s understanding of self-consciousness i.e. where are they, what are they doing and how are they behaving. In medical science, seizure means always ‘epileptic seizure’ and in children, it can happen for reasons such as fainting, febrile convulsions etc. When a child is ill and having high grade fever, it is likely to have fits or convulsions.
The human brain has many tasks to do at a time. It controls the personal behavior, emotions, consciousness, memory, movement, mood and senses. If a child has seizures, or epilepsy, any of these can be badly affected. Epileptic seizure may appear different from child to child. The symptoms in seizures depend on the area of the brain which has been damaged or affected.
In many cases, the cause of epilepsy is generally unknown. Although, it can be due to some disease like meningitis, a malformation of the brain or any problem with a child’s metabolism or damage to their brain. Damage to the brain could be due to congenital defect (difficult birth) or some head injury.
Many of the parents think that it is their fault that their child developed epilepsy. The inheritance of epilepsy is a complicated issue. Though, where a genetic link has been found for particular type of epilepsy (like in Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy), there is often no other family member with the same condition. Only a doctor can guide you about the epilepsy. It is important to know the difference between the febrile convulsions and epilepsy. You need to diagnose the root-cause i.e. whether the seizures are due to some underlying disease or it itself is disease/symptom. Children like adults, can either have generalized or partial seizures. Other symptoms may confuse one that whether it is an epilepsy or anything else.
When a child is having high grade fever, they may have fits called as febrile convulsions. This is the serious condition and one should see the doctor as early as possible. They can be controlled by giving some intravenous injections. Once the convulsion stops, you can put cold-packs on the child’s body to make temperature down.
Breath-holding attacks are extreme react into shock or frustration. Many times children during cry or during anger hold breath for a long time and then there will be something like fits or seizures that make parents fear.
The perfect diagnosis can be done by something called EEG and brain scans. Some blood report may be helpful. Once the case is labeled epileptic, drugs called as Anti-epileptic drug (AED) is started. The course of this drug is to be carried long till the symptom get over and your doctor advises to stop that. The dose is never to be missed and certain regimens are to be followed during the course of treatment.
