Breastfeeding is must to newborn as breastmilk is nectar for an infant. Infant cannot digest any other food particles other than the breastmilk. Breastmilk provides nutrients and most importantly, an immunity power. Any other supplement in the world would not supply such immunity to an infant, which works as a shield against various infections.
Sometimes, it is quite difficult to breastfeed a baby due to various reasons. Some of them are mentioned below-
Breastfeeding Problem #1: Mastitis
Mastitis is the condition in which, there is swelling or inflammation of the breast along with breast cells. The other symptoms include fatigue, fever, chills, vomiting and sometimes headache. The breast becomes red, swollen and tender. The condition is often treated with antibiotics and breastfeeding is continued if possible.
Breastfeeding Problem #2: Sore Nipples
During first few days, nipples may be a bit tender but normally a mother gets accustomed to it. Sore nipples are generally caused by your baby not being latched on or positioned in a proper way in your lap or besides you. Make so that baby is latched onto the areola and not just the nipple. Wash the nipple and surrounding area properly after, each feed so that there are fewer chances for the occurrence of the sore nipples.
Breastfeeding Problem #3: Inadequacy of milk into the breast
There could be lack of milk or the production of the milk in the breast could be not enough for the baby. This is the physiological problem than the pathological. Certain Ayurvedic herbs increase the breastmilk production (called as lactogenic). They also increase the hormone responsible for the milk production in the woman.
Breastfeeding Problem #4: Plugged ducts
When a thickened mass of the milk or cast-off cells block the duct that supplies the milk to an infant (the ducts that open out in the nipple) then, they are called as plugged ducts. This can occur when the milk does not empty completely from the particular area due to some nursing position. The mother may feel tender and hard lump in the breast and flu like symptoms. This is treated with dissolving the lump from the breast. Breastfeeding can be continued.
Breastfeeding Problem #5: Breast masses and abscesses
This is the dangerous condition and the breastfeeding is to be stopped as it may infect the baby. Abscesses contain pus and they are highly infected. Breast mass could be due to many reason including cancer and so for the safety measurements, breastfeeding is stopped until the condition is treated. An infant can be put onto infant formulas.
Breastfeeding Problem #6: Thrushes
Thrushes are common yeast infections, which can be passed between the mother and the baby during the event of breastfeeding. The yeast that causes the infection is generally found in the places where the moisture is present. Mothers’ nipple and infant’s surrounding area of mouth are the perfect places for the yeast to grow. Thrushes bring soreness, tender and cracks of the nipple that may interrupt the breastfeeding. Anti-fungal therapy may work for the same.
Breastfeeding Problem #7: Inverted and flat nipples
This comes under nipple anatomy abnormalities. This can surely cause the difficulties in breastfeeding a baby. You can gently squeeze the areola behind the base of the nipple with your forefinger and thumb to check out whether you have inverted, reverted or flat nipples. This is anatomical abnormality and hence, you cannot treat with medicines. All you need to do is, extract the milk out of the breast with your hands and then feed the baby with the milk.
Breastfeeding Problem #8: Breast engorgement
This common problem features breast getting engorged and swollen. It is tender and throbbing in some woman. The situation is tackled by hot shower bath, putting hot packs on the breasts, massaging breast with some herbal oil, and compress from cabbage leaves and wearing a loose fitting supportive nursing bras.
