Breastfeeding babies are the babies who depend mostly on the breastmilk for their growth and development. They are certainly newborn infants up to a year or so. Breastfeeding babies need extra and gentle care as compare to children with advanced age.
Breastfeeding babies are the most delicate ones, as they know nothing except sucking, sleeping, crying, eliminating and waving their extremities as involuntary movements. Even slightest tap is painful to them and they start crying. All these features make them to be special ones and therefore, they should be secured by all aspects in any circumstances.
Infants do not have developed bodily systems. All the systems such as digestive system, excretory system, nervous system, cardiovascular system, immune system etc are yet to be developed and therefore, they all are should be at rest for most of the time during day and night until they become mature and capable enough to do their work.
Breastfeeding provides all the nutrients to the babies, which are very essential for baby’s growth and development. The milk from outside may provide all of them (as available in various infant’s formulas) but the most importantly, these outer supplements cannot provide the immunity what a natural mother’s milk has for the baby. Breastmilk contains those unseen powers that supply immunity to the baby and that cannot be created in any of the artificially developed infant formula.
Another important thing to be noticed is the ‘mother-touch’. It is observed that there is a strong bond between a baby and its mother. Both of them are emotionally attached and the baby touches its mother, it makes mother proud to be what she is for her baby. In a same way, the warmth of mother’s body is very important for a baby, as a baby feels secure in mother’s lap or the place where a baby is kept closest to her.
There are lot many styles in which a mother can feed her baby. The most famous and convenient is transverse or crossover hold. In this, a proper way to hold a baby is chest-to-chest that is at the level of the breast. Baby’s head is in the crook of mother’s arm and the hand should hold baby’s buttocks.
Football hold is another good position to feed a baby. This is specially taught to a mother having premature or cesarean birth babies. Here, the mother has to press her breast gently, when a baby is sucking with a support of mothers other hand under baby’s neck. The pressing of breast is important, as premature baby may not have capacity to suck properly.
The lying down position is all time favorite for almost all mothers in the world. Here, the mother keeps her baby closest to her breast when she is lying down either at left side or at left. The nipple is then given to a baby with the other hand of the mother working as pillow under the baby’s head. This is the most comfortable position for both; mother and a baby.
In precautions, whatever the position you adopt (especially lying down), you should take care that your breast is not obstructing baby’s nose in breathing. Keep only nipple in baby’s mouth and the rest of the part of the breast away from mouth and nose. This requires constant observation. Another precaution is checking your nipple daily for any cracks or infections. They are to be washed thoroughly as it may ingest infections into baby. Cracked nipple may bleed and the blood may go along the milk, which is to be avoided.
