This is the time when a baby teeth start being replaced by new grown-up teeth. Some of the babies begin teething early – nearly about three months old, and some teeth later, granting exhausted parents a few extra time of sound sleep which they may spend worrying about the fact that their baby still has to have teeth.
On other hand, premature babies may teeth later and one can consider that as a blessing. Some babies do not develop their first teeth even at the age of seven months or even more. Few of them may even be a year old before displaying you their first single tooth! Just as many things about babies, we cannot schedule the progress on their age and your baby will start teething when it is ready, weather you are ready or not.
What first comes is the front tooth; it could be upper one or lower one. While teething, your baby may become irritable and may leave playing. It is disturbed all the time and in some cases, it needs something to chew all the time just because it is getting some itching over the growing gums inside the mouth. That is why we often find a child inserting anything into the mouth and starts chewing it when it is in the teething period.
One of the most popular remedies to help your baby from teething pain is cold or anything from the freezer may help. A wet washcloth is generally used. Cold water eases the swelling in the gums. Other cool items include teething rings, popsicles and chilled vegetable that can be gummed without falling apart and causing chocking.
De-stressing the baby is equally important in case of teething. You can fondle your baby by massaging, playing soft music, talking or you can play some rhymes. You can also get your baby a cool, weak chamomile tea that can help them to bring a natural sleep.
Some of the traditional method like Ayurveda says that you can apply honey over the gums so that teething becomes less irritant for the child. Some of the experts favor ghee (the butter oil) instead of honey.
You should not start feeding with solid foods immediately when a baby is getting teeth. A baby may not able to chew properly and therefore, those solid foods may produce indigestion leading to abdominal cramps and stomach disturbance. Let your baby remain on liquid diet and you can eventually start with semi-solid diet and lend up on solid diet once the child has teeth strong enough to bite and to grind the food.
