Baby Flu

How to decide that your baby has flu?

Flu may simply be lethargic on the initial stage and may not show major symptoms that can give you hint of forthcoming disease. In some cases, baby may show remarkably similar illness to those of cold and other viral condition. This means, if the flu is going around and your baby has some of the symptoms; typically 101 degree fever or higher, fatigue and chills followed by respiratory symptoms like running nose and a dry cough (sometimes wet) with congestion in chest and nose, then probably you need to have a thought that your baby might be in flu condition.

Your baby can also develop irritable nature and sore throat and swollen glands. The flu can also produce abdominal pain, vomiting and in some cases diarrhea.

How does your baby get flu?

The flu viruses are known as influenza A and influenza B are potent pathogens in close quarters that can easily spread through the air. Flu is also known as influenza is an infectious disease that can affect to both birds and mammals. There could be infection by air or droplet infection. If your baby is exposed to those pathogens, it may get affected.

If your child is school going, it can get infection if any of a child is infected with flu in his or her classroom. It can spread by air, sneezing, coughing as the microorganism responsible for the disease lie in the mucus presented in the respiratory track.

If the toys are common between infected and non-infected child, then also there are chances of transmission. Other common transports are waterbag, lunch-box, handkerchief and other child accessories.

Signs and symptoms of flu in babies

The first sign of the disease appears 1-4 days after the virus has entered into child’s body. They are chills, dry cough and if your child can complain the headache. These symptoms are then soon followed by overall body ace and fever that can be as high as 104 degree. Once the fever starts declining, the nose (nasal) congestion and a sore throat take place and are really noticeable. The flu can make baby or child lethargic and they do not find play or any other activity interesting. They become weak and their appetite may also go down. The infection is heavy and therefore, even after it is cured, the weakness remains in a child for quite some time.

The complications of flu often lead to seriousness and these complications are confused with bacterial infection that gets into the lower respiratory track. The signs and symptoms of secondary infection usually appear just as a baby seems to be recovering from the illness. Signs like high fever, chest pains, chills and cough that can have thick and yellowish sputum. Appearance of these secondary symptoms needs medical attention.

Diagnosing flu in babies

he symptoms of a flu infection are familiar to all medical workers. Doctors and nurses can usually diagnose the disease simply by examining a patient. Tests are available to identify the flu virus and the various forms in which it occurs, but these tests are seldom needed for the purpose of diagnosis. Some tests may be necessary to diagnose secondary infections. For example, a doctor may take a throat culture to identify a throat infection.

The signs and symptoms of the flu infection in child are similar to common cold with fever and therefore diagnose is often failed on the examination table. It is therefore, always advisable to go for the confirmation of the presence of flu virus in the bloodstream. Blood test is normal but useful tool to get confirmation. Another tests can be performed include throat swab culture, chest X-Ray and serum examination.

Treatment of flu in babies

It falls in viral infection category and so medical science has no sure-shot treatment for virus. There could be supportive treatment for the body’s immunity to fight against the infection. Doctors often prefer antibiotics to prevent the secondary infection and not to cure the main disease. Other general idea for treating flu is giving rest to a baby or a child and not to allow it to play. Lots of fluids are to be given to flush out the infection. A steam vaporizer can make breathing easy to children. One should remember that children are not given the dose of aspirin as it may turn condition dangerous. Better idea is to see the doctor.

Ayurveda says that this falls in the ‘jwara’ category in which the body temperature is high. Some of the herbs like Tulasi, Patola, Saptachakra, Pushkarmool can be helpful treating condition. Any formula containing these herbs can be taken but it should be under strict medical observation of the physician.
