Baby adoption can be defined as the legal act of permanently having a child with you as a parents or guardians in your house though you have not given birth to that child. Baby adoption order has the effect of setting many parental responsibilities. There are many rights of the birth parents to be transferred onto adoptive parents while adopting a child.
After the finalization of adopting a child is done, there will be no legal deference between the children born to parents and the adopted ones. The adoption is the best solution to an infertile couple or for a couple who wants a desired gender of a baby. It is seen in many educated couple that they want a pair of boy and girl, they produce a boy and then they adopt girl because they don’t want to take chance to produce one more baby in case it turns to be one more boy.
There are many types of adoption depending upon sharing the information, location and origin. In most jurisdictions, an adoption begins with a decision of birth parents to keep their infant or unborn baby with any other family. This depends on the local law and jurisdiction that they may find adopting parents or can choose adopting parents. This is done because in some countries, privately arranged adoptions are illegal.
Here are some of the main adoption types…
Closed adoption
In this type of adoption, non-identifying information is shared (like medical history) between the parties like birth parents and adopting parents till the adopting formalities are completed. Once the adoption is legalized, no further information is shared.
Semi opened adoption
In semi-opened adoption, the birth parents can meet the adoptive parents for one or several times and then they have no more contact especially physically or face to face. Letters and pictures are exceptions. They can be exchanged directly or by keeping third person or agency.
Open adoption
This is where the adopted person has all the access to their file or/and original records containing details about him or herself. However, this right is available generally when he or she reaches to the age eighteen.
There is another way to define open adoption, in which, birth parents are allowed to make a decision of meeting adoptive parents before they choose to place their baby to them. This also includes exchange of letters, photographs, videos and emails. However, in some jurisdiction, this type of adoption is not legally enforceable agreement.
Domestic adoption
In this adoption, the child is placed or allowed being adopted within the country in which he or she was born and lives. There is a special case called ‘interstate’ adoption, where an adoption is possible across the state lines in the US or Russia. For instance, US and Canada, but in this case, additional regulations may apply.
International adoption
As the name suggest, here the child is allowed being adopted across the world. the laws of different regions and countries may vary. Many countries may not allow this type of adoption due to one or the other reason.
Intra-family adoption
This happens when a child is adopted by an existing close family member. One of the commonest events for this adoption is ‘step-parent adoption’. In this, new partner of a parent legally adopts a child from the parent’s past relationships. Intra-family adoption may also result through surrender as in case of parental death or in the case when the birth parents cannot care the child anymore.
For the birth parents, the reason could be inability to take care for the child. In US and UK, common reason for why children are placed for adoption is maltreatment by their birth parents. Another reason includes when birth parents are not in a situation that they an raise a child with good future, plans and goals. Gender preference, societal stigma towards single parenthood etc are also factors to be considered.
For adopting parents, infertility is common. Some single people and same-sex couple generally adopt child because they lack of a partner of the opposite sex or they lack of desire to get sperm donor. In western countries, stepparent adoption is very commonly seen as a form of adoption. This is done to build up a new family following divorce or death of any one among parents.
